Art at the Safari Club

Posted by sierraweb on January 26, 2008

The Safari Club International convention in Reno isn’t just about booking a safari or checking out the latest in hunting gear.  This annual gathering also features some of the very best in wildlife, Western and hunting art in the world.

In fact, you’re exposed to great art before you even get into the exhibit hall-  The convention directory, which includes the program and schedule for the four-day event, features images from a couple of the great names in Western art on its front and back covers.

On the front is a painting by Tom Mansanarez, “Narrow Escape.”  As always, Mansanarez has exquisitely captured the texture of light as it illuminates a scene of a mountain lion pouncing toward a bounding muley buck.

On the back cover is Craig Tennant’s “Over the Limit.”  No one captures life in the West with quite the same soul that Tennant does.  The way in which he presents the people and places is so true to their spirit that it can be almost heartbreaking at times.

And these are only two of the more than 70 artists exhibiting at this year’s convention, tagged “Own the Adventure.”  For more information about SCI and the annual convention in Reno, visit www.safariclub.org.

LeMaitre’s Oilcans at Metro Gallery

Posted by sierraweb on January 16, 2008

oilcanfront.gif

Metro Gallery presents “Oil Cans— An Iconic Form” by George LeMaitre through March 7 in Reno City Hall, located at 1 East First Street in downtown Reno.

LeMaitre works in many different media, in both two- and three-dimensional formats. “This has given me the freedom to express my artistic and aesthetic ideas to their fullest,” he feels.

In the Metro exhibit, LeMaitre has striven to touch on certain qualities of the oil can— its monolithic stature as a three-dimensional form, its iconic nature, its symbolism of our society’s industrial past, and its pop art imagery.

“Oil Cans” comprises both three-dimensional fired clay works and two-dimensional acrylic paintings. “I like the way they all complement each other and encourage the viewer to compare and contrast the varied aspects of the oil can in an aesthetic context.”

LeMaitre has studied at UC Berkeley and the San Francisco Art Institute, and holds a B.F.A. from Colorado State University. He currently teaches art at Smith Valley High School in Lyon County, Nev., where he also serves as a curator for the Lyon County Courthouse Gallery, and co-owns both the KSVL radio station and the Starry Night Art Ranch.

Metro Gallery is funded by the City of Reno Arts and Culture Commission and is managed by Sierra Arts.  It is open to the public Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sierra Arts Gallery welcomes Peter Goin’s “Contested Places” photography exhibit through March 6, with an opening reception January 18, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Peter Goin is a foundation professor and has been in the Department of Art at the University of Nevada, Reno, since 1984. He is internationally recognized for his powerful photographs dealing with the long-term impact of culture and technology on the environment.

“Contested Places” features stunning images of the wild and desolate West, such as “Burnt Joshua Trees,” looking northwest at the Joshua Tree Wilderness boundary, near Hidden Valley, and “Last Light over Wizard Island,” presenting a view from northwest of Llao Rock, at Crater Lake, Ore.

Goin’s work integrates history, architecture, urban planning, and the social and political sciences with the environment. He has published 16 books, and 43 major collections have acquired his work. The Library of Congress alone owns 350 of his photographs.

The Sierra Arts Gallery is located at 17 S. Virginia St., Suite 120, in the heart of downtown Reno’s downtown arts district. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Call 329-ARTS for more information.
